Protect Family Rights Coalition Applauds Rep. Mia Love, Utah Congressional Delegation for Introducing H.R. 6816 to Save Parental Filtering Industry

Despite Intense Pressure from Hollywood to Stop the Family Movie Act Clarification Act of 2018, Congresswoman Love and her Colleagues are Taking a Stand with Parents to Protect Children from Violence, Sex and Profanity in Movies

(Washington, DC—September 14, 2018) The Protect Family Rights Coalition (PFRC) applauds Congresswoman Mia Love (R-UT) and the Utah Congressional Delegation for introducing H.R. 6816, The Family Movie Act Clarification Act of 2018, a bill which updates the Family Movie Act of 2005 to clarify that it also explicitly covers filtering entertainment content on modern streaming services, the most common technology for movie and TV viewing today.

“The 2005 Family Movie Act was a long and extremely hard-fought battle in which we were outspent and outmanned, and yet despite major pressure from Hollywood, were able to convince both parties in Congress to do the right thing for parents and their children. Today is no different. Despite even greater pressure from Disney and Hollywood, Utah’s Congressional delegation—led by Rep. Mia Love—is standing together and doing what is right rather than what is politically expedient. This is the kind of moment the American people live for,” said Bill Aho, former CEO of ClearPlay and Executive Director of the Protect Family Rights Coalition. “We call on the House Judiciary Committee, the Administration, and representatives in both parties and both chambers to immediately get behind this bill and see that it arrives on the President’s desk. We are united in our resolve to see this through.”

Rep. Love’s bill is in response to a plea from a group of the most prominent family, children and faith-based leaders who have asked Congress to defend filtered movie streaming from Hollywood opposition. Those supporters include:

  • Tony Perkins, President of Family Research Council
  • Dr. James Dobson, President of Family Talk
  • Tim Winter, President of Parents Television Council
  • David Bozell, President of ForAmerica
  • Dr. Ted Baehr, Chairman of the Christian Film and Television Commission
  • Paul Weber, CEO of the National Family Policy Alliance
  • Pat Trueman, CEO of the National Center on Sexual Exploitation
  • Bishop Harry Jackson, Presiding Bishop, ICC Churches
  • Pastor Jim Garlow, Senior Pastor, Skyline Church

The 2018 Family Movie Act Clarification Act will put an end to Hollywood’s 20-year campaign to destroy the movie and TV filtering industry. PFRC stands with families who are using legally-licensed streaming services like Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu to be allowed to add filtering through third-party providers, such as VidAngel or ClearPlay. These services can then be available for consumers using devices such as Roku, Chromecast or Amazon’s Fire Stick.
